The Musical Sideshow Coming to Stage 62!!!

My neighbor and good friend Rob James is directing the musical Sideshow at Stage 62!  Please check out his link below, and come out to support this great cast!  Being a part of Stage 62, I can say the experience of working with these talented group of actors in the past is amazing.

SSS_BossAs the group’s president, Rob is either on stage or behind the scenes for most of Stage 62′s productions. He directed the critically acclaimed and national recognized production of SWEENEY TODD. Other favorite directing projects at 62 include: DORA’S PIRATE ADVENTURE (twice!), Company, Into the Woods, Kiss Me Kate, and Brigadoon. He has also directed 30 productions at Carlynton High School, and he works for the Pittsburgh CLO Creative Visions Program. We can’t think of a better guy to bring “Side Show” to life.

If you could go back in time and catch any show what would it be?
This may seem crazy, but I was in NYC TWICE during the (very short) original run of Side Show and I walked right by it both times. I wish I would have ignored the title and bought the ticket. I saw the show in a stripped down version a couple of years later in Cleveland (Cleveland!) and instantly and completely fell in love with it.

If you could go back in time and meet a famous actor, who would it be?
A Streetcar Named Desire-era Marlon Brando. I wonder if he realized how profoundly he would affect stage & film acting with that one performance. Also, he was very handsome.

What is your favorite memory of being on stage?
My favorite memory of being onstage would have to be the finale of Stage 62’s production of The Full Monty. Every night the crowd was ready to rush the stage. And then the six of us were completely nude. Creative lighting kept the rating PG13, but if you were listening to the audience, it sounded like they just saw the guys in Magic Mike strip!

What inspired you to direct Side Show?
I like that the show doesn’t moralize too much. I like that, if done well, it can really make you take a step back and think about how easy it is to be hateful toward anyone different. I think that is a lesson that is always worth learning.

What do you think will be the most challenging thing about directing a show like this?
The most challenging thing is finding the right tone. It can’t be a show full of misery and despair. No one wants to watch puppies get kicked for two hours. Nor can it be a big, bright flashy show… it needs to feel like there is always something in the shadows…

What do you like about working with Stage 62?
Hands down, the people. They are talented. They are dedicated. They are insanely fun. There are no qualms about working in the ensemble after headlining the previous show. There is a respect for what we, as a group, as a team, are trying to accomplish.  And it is very close to my house.
